Contemporary Art Society
Gifted, art and craft from the Contemporary Art Society
This exhibition, marking the centenary of the Contemporary Art Society, shows a selection of the works given to Cheltenham Art Gallery & Museum, since becoming a member almost 70 years ago.
It includes work by some of the great names in 20th-century British art, Paul Nash, Duncan Grant and Kenneth Armitage. There is also fascinating work by lesser known artists, including an intriguing surrealist work by Leslie Hurry and a magnificent abstract geometric ‘landscape’ by Harold Cohen. Artists from the region are represented by the Bristol-based sculptor, Stephen Cox and Avray Wilson who lived at Bisley. The exhibition explores some of the hidden controversies behind the work, as well as the impact of changing taste and fashion in the building of a collection.
Representing Craft is furniture by Richard la Trobe-Bateman, ceramics by Walter Keeler and silver by Rebecca de Quin.
There is an accompanying programme of talks and events, and a catalogue of the exhibition is available online.
