Looking in Wonderland
Looking in Wonderland: Sir John Tenniel's illustrations to the Alice Books
Legend has it that the inspiration for the character Alice in the stories Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, had connections with Cheltenham. She was called Alice Liddell and from time to time visited her grandparents who lived in Charlton Kings.
John Tenniel was a political cartoonist for Punch based in London. In 1864 Lewis Carroll asked him if he would illustrate Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Their combined creative genius led to both books being an instant success. This exhibition celebrates some of the best illustrations from both books which have been printed from the original wood engraved blocks.
A Graphicus Touring exhibition.
