History in the Making

History in the Making

23 May 2012

Wednesday 23 May heralds an historic occasion for Cheltenham when the Olympic torch is carried through the streets.  Cheltenham Art Gallery & Museum are marking the event by recording it for posterity.

We will be creating an archive for the museum created by four very different people’s take on the torch procession.  The photographer Ben Cavanna, will be recording the crowds, the torch and activities along the way; the poet Sarah-Jane Arbury will be creating original verse, and poet and writer Marcus Moore will be making observations in his original and poignant prose.  Meanwhile local film-maker Chris Stratton will be filming the procession and all the fun at Cheltenham Racecourse.

At Montpellier Gardens we will also be offering fun activities for all the family – making flags to wave as the torch goes by and bunting to hang along the park railings - during the afternoon from 3.00-6.00pm, before the torch arrives.
