May Morris

A display celebrating the life and work of May Morris, the embroiderer, writer and daughter of William Morris. We have recently acquired an embroidery panel designed by May, and this is on display for the first time alongside other Morris and Company textiles, as well as books and letters by May.
Looting Tibet
1 July – 15 August
A display of fascinating objects acquired on the Younghusband expedition to Tibet, 1903 – 04. This British expedition, intent on maintaining the balance of power in central Asia, met initial resistance, and many in the Tibetan army including monks were killed. (Arranged to link with the Cheltenham Music Festival's creation of a Tibetan sand mandala, performance and workshops by the Tashi Lhunpo monks, 12 – 17 July Queens Hotel, and other venues).

Test & Demonstrations: Works in Sunlight

During July a group of artists will be creating new work in Cheltenham. Based at meantime they will interact with the public in various ways and hold two workshops here at Cheltenham Art Gallery & Museum on 31 July. Participants will create cans which spray light, instead of paint, in order to create an after-dark light graffiti event on the same evening, in Clarence Street.
